A short walk went a long way

Over 130 walkers braved the rain and wind on Sunday 23 November to take part in the fourth annual Walk for AIDS in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.

After the traditional Welcome to Country by Mark Whightman from the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, our MC, Ita Buttrose, introduced a series of speakers to officially launch the event:

  • Jason Appleby, President, Positive Life NSW
  • The Hon. Tanya Plibersek, MP, Minister for Housing, Minister for the Status of Women and Federal Member for Sydney
  • Shayne Mallard, Councillor, City of Sydney, who represented the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, Leader of the Opposition and Federal Member for Wentworth

Following the formalities, more than 130 people joined Ita Buttrose, Shayne Mallard, newsreader Anton Enus from SBS and BGF Board Member Bill Bowtell in walking the two kilometre route through the Domain and the Royal Botanic Gardens. After the Walk, participants and their friends enjoyed a sausage sizzle in the Domain while being entertained by singer and guitarist Linda Hansen.

The Walk for AIDS was jointly organised by the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON), Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) and Positive Life NSW. All of the money raised in the Walk for AIDS will be shared between the three charities.

This year, we raised over $24,000, which will go towards providing advocacy, care and essential support services to people living with HIV.

ACON, BGF and Positive Life NSW would like to thank:

  • The Royal Botanic Gardens Trust, Sydney
  • The pharmaceutical companies Tibotec and Gilead
  • Our MC Ita Buttrose
  • The Hon. Tanya Plibersek, MP
  • Shayne Mallard
  • Anton Enus
  • Linda Hansen
  • The Walk for AIDS Committee which comprises staff from all three organisations
